$1 Billion to Spend, 5 Months to Do It
SSA Acquisition Deputy Speaks of Spending Priorities at GovConnects Biz Breakfast

April 18, 2017

The Howard County Chamber (Chamber) welcomed the Social Security Administration's Christian Hellie at its April 18th Biz Breakfast. Speaking to nearly 50 attendees, Hellie focused on priority spending areas as well as socio-economic goals. The Acting Deputy Associate Commissioner for Acquisition and Grants reported that most spending is to support the administration's disability processing system and its customer service delivery. It was reported that opportunities about for small businesses that are in the hardware and software business.

Hellie also reported that SSA is moving more of its operations to web based systems which will lend itself to more opportunities for firms offering cybersecurity solutions. In fact, nearly 75% of the acquisitions budget will involve IT software, hardware, and professional services covering long-term telecommunications needs, cloud services, physical security upgrades, and information security.

Like most federal agencies, SSA spending has reached an impasse but Hellie expects the agency to spend approximately $1 billion over the next five months as the administration looks to meet this fiscal year’s purchasing priorities. This spending bodes well for small businesses, WBE's, and those with HubZone status as the agency has a history of meeting its sets aside goals. Breakfast attendees were encouraged to become familiar with the SSA Office of Acquisition and Grants website and be prepared to respond promptly to RFI's and RFP's when announced as the response time will be abbreviated. Hellie's presentation will be made available to Howard Chamber members. Interested parties should email jnitz@howardchamber.com for a copy of the presentation.
